Interpretation of scientific data in the Holy Quran verses
First: The Concept of Fine-Tuning in the Universe and Life
Definition and Concept
Fine-Tuning is a hypothesis stating that life as we know it cannot exist unless the constants of nature—such as the electron charge and gravitational force—are at extremely precise values.
Cosmic Fine-Tuning: Refers to the fundamental physical constants that govern the universe, where any slight change in them makes life impossible.
Biological Fine-Tuning: Living organisms are precisely tuned for life, as their ability to solve survival and reproduction problems critically depends on this precise fine-tuning.
Second: Respiratory Mechanisms as an Example of Fine-Tuning
- Respiratory Pressures
A. Atmospheric Pressure
Pressure at sea level: 760 mm Hg
It is the force exerted by air gases on any surface
Plays a crucial role in respiratory mechanics
B. Intrapulmonary Pressure
The pressure inside the alveoli
Changes during different phases of breathing
During inhalation: decreases below atmospheric pressure (approximately 756 mm Hg)
During exhalation: rises above atmospheric pressure
C. Intrapleural Pressure
The pressure inside the pleural cavity (between the pleural membranes)
Always negative (less than atmospheric pressure)
Approximately -4 mm Hg at rest
This negative pressure prevents lung collapse - Mechanics of Breathing
A. Inhalation (Inspiration)
Contraction of the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles
Increase in thoracic cavity volume
Decrease in pressure inside the lungs (below 760 mm Hg)
Air flows from the area of higher pressure (atmosphere) to the area of lower pressure (lungs)
B. Exhalation (Expiration)
Relaxation of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles
Decrease in thoracic cavity volume
Increase in pressure inside the lungs (above 760 mm Hg)
Air exits from the lungs to the atmosphere
Third: The Relationship Between the Cosmic System and the Biological System - Precise Interconnection
Fine-tuning in biological systems is more extreme than fine-tuning in cosmology, as living systems require extreme precision in physical and chemical constants.
Interrelated Factors:
Atmospheric composition: Oxygen ratio (21%), Nitrogen (78%), Other gases (1%)
Atmospheric pressure: Must be within a specific range
Temperature: Allows water to exist in liquid state
Gravitational force: Maintains the atmosphere - Quranic Evidence
Allah the Almighty said:
“So whoever Allah wants to guide – He expands his breast to [accept] Islam; and whoever He wants to misguide – He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky.”
[Al-An’am: 125]
Scientific Interpretation:
The verse connects the psychological state (guidance and misguidance) with the physical state (chest tightness and breathing difficulty)
The simile “climbing into the sky” refers to the difficulty of breathing at high altitudes where atmospheric pressure and oxygen levels decrease
This is a scientific fact that was not discovered until centuries after the revelation of the Quran
This demonstrates the remarkable precision in both cosmic constants and biological systems, pointing to intentional design and divine wisdom.
