The Scientific Miracle in the Hadith: “The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah…”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone. So when you see them, supplicate to Allah and pray until the eclipse is over.”
In another narration:
“The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah with which He frightens His servants. They do not eclipse for the death of anyone among the people. So, if you see anything of that, then pray.”

📝 Hadith Explanation & Lessons
• Signs of Divine Power: The sun and the moon are grand evidence of Allah’s power.
• Refuting Superstitions: The Prophet (PBUH) explicitly denied that eclipses occur due to the death or birth of anyone. This was stated on the day his own son, Ibrahim, passed away, which coincided with a solar eclipse.
• Legislative Wisdom: This Hadith liberated minds from Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic) myths involving dragons or monsters devouring the sun. It established the scientific and religious fact that eclipses are organized cosmic phenomena.
🌍 Eclipse Myths Across Civilizations
The Prophet (PBUH) refuted global myths that were prevalent at the time, such as:
- Pre-Islamic Arabs: Believed eclipses occurred for the death or birth of a great person.
- Ancient China: Believed a celestial dragon devoured the sun; they beat drums to scare it away.
- Vikings: Believed two wolves (Skoll and Hati) chased and caught the sun and moon.
- Mesopotamia (Babylon): Viewed it as a bad omen for the King; they used “substitute kings” for protection.
- Ancient Greece: Saw it as a sign of divine wrath and impending disaster.
- Ancient Egypt: Believed the serpent Apep attacked the boat of the Sun God, Ra.
- Native Americans: Various myths, such as a black squirrel biting the sun.
- Ancient India: Believed the demon Rahu swallowed the sun.
- Incas (Peru): Believed a jaguar attacked the moon.
- Other Cultures: Myths involving giant frogs or pets attacking celestial bodies.
The Miracle: Islam replaced these myths with a sound scientific and spiritual explanation 1400 years ago!
🌟 Aspects of Miracles and Wisdom in the Eclipse Prayer
I. Glorifying Allah and Reflecting on Creation
- Terminology (Two Signs): Describing them as “Signs” (Ayat) moves them from being “deities” (as in Greek or Egyptian myths) to “tools/indicators” of the Creator, inviting the human mind to study their mechanics.
- Astronomical Precision: Reflecting on how the sun and moon move in perfectly calculated orbits.
II. Protecting the Eyes from Harmful Radiation - The Danger: Looking at a solar eclipse without protection causes Solar Retinopathy, which can lead to permanent retinal burns.
- Absence of Pain: Retinal damage doesn’t cause immediate pain, so people may not realize the danger until it is too late.
- How Prayer Protects: By engaging in prayer (prostration and looking down), Muslims are kept busy with worship rather than looking directly at the dangerous radiation.
III. Crisis Management (Psychological Framing)
Historically, sudden eclipses caused Mass Panic. Islamic guidance transformed this “chaos and fear” into “order and serenity” through communal prayer and remembrance.
IV. Breaking “False Correlations”
In logic, “correlation does not imply causation.” The Prophet (PBUH) intervened to cut the false link between his son’s death and the eclipse, calling for an understanding of cosmic laws (Sunan) rather than emotional interpretations.
V. Establishing the Era of “Observation and Monitoring”
Instead of hiding in fear, Muslims were ordered to go to the mosque and observe the phenomenon through worship. This paved the way for later Muslim astronomers like Al-Battani and Ibn al-Haytham to study these events as regular, mathematical movements rather than random accidents.
